School Visits
Are you looking for something fun and inspiring to do with your class? Are you looking for the opportunity for your class to engage directly with history with fun activities in an exciting and beautiful setting?
Discover the history of Sandwich through our collections and historic sixteenth-century courtroom.
Sandwich Guildhall Museum welcomes school groups to explore the rich history of one of England’s ancient Cinque Ports. Our collections span thousands of years, from prehistoric and Roman Sandwich to the medieval town, the Tudors and more recent history.
We offer guided tours of the museum and courtroom, with opportunities to explore historical objects and learn about the people, places and events that have contributed to the town’s fascinating history.
We would be happy to discuss your school visit so we can make sure you get the most out of your time here. Visits can be tailored to different age groups and curriculum topics. A room in the Guildhall can also be arranged for lunch, subject to availability.

Exploring Our Collections
From a remarkable Roman copper-alloy bowl to 1300 Magna Carta and Charter of the Forest, the museum holds objects and documents that offer fascinating starting points for exploring history.
Our historic Tudor courtroom provides a particularly memorable setting for discovering how justice was administered and how local government worked in the past.
Developing Our Learning Programme
October 2026 — Grant application successful
We are delighted that our application for £9,305 through the Museum Learning and Engagement Grants programme has been successful.
Subject to formal acceptance of the award, the funding will support the development of a new curriculum-linked learning programme in partnership with Sandwich Junior School, Sandwich Technology School, Sir Roger Manwood’s School and Sandwich Medieval Centre, with guidance from an external museum learning specialist. The project will focus on pupils making the transition from primary to secondary school. Planned activities include Tudor courtroom re-enactments, object-based learning and opportunities for students to create their own interpretations of objects in the museum’s collection.
We hope the project will establish a lasting learning offer for local schools, making greater use of our historic building and collections.
Further details will follow as the programme develops.
