
Let’s do the time walk again!

Let’s do the time walk again! is a project funded by The National Heritage Lottery Fund and created by Canterbury Christ Church University in partnership with Sandwich Guildhall Museum, Deal Maritime and Local History Museum, Ramsgate Clock House Museum and Dickens House Museum.
The purpose of the project is to digitise archives from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century to create a series of walks through time and place, virtually or physically. The walks between the towns will be connected together.

Sandwich: History on the High Street
Sandwich Guildhall Museum will be recruiting four volunteers in the first instance, ideally those who are keen to pursue a career in heritage or museums, for the project. The volunteers will be trained to digitise and interpret the museum’s postcard collection and create and maintain a website showcasing their work.
The tasks will include:
Carrying out an inventory of the postcard collection – describing each item of the collection and ensuring they are packed appropriately.
Digitising the postcard collection.
Carrying out research into the addresses, names and events referred to on the postcards.
Interpreting the findings for the website, uploading information and maintaining the website.
Potentially supporting students to photograph the streets as they are, with similar angles to images in the postcards.

Volunteers will benefit by receiving training for working with, including digitising, a museum collection. They will also have the opportunity to develop IT skills in order to produce and maintain the website showcasing the collection. There will also be the opportunity to connect with volunteers from the other sites involved and attend networking events.



Get involved
The project is set to last two years and although it would be great for volunteers to have the opportunity to work on it from the start to finish, we understand that this may not be possible.
Volunteer shifts will take place for at least three hours per week between Wednesday and Sunday. We aim to be as flexible as possible; therefore, the volunteers will be asked their availability, and the most appropriate time will be selected.
Volunteers must be over 18 years of age.
